Music on Mondays: David Fanshawe – African Sanctus

This week the composer and traveller David Fanshawe passed away. I remember learning about his African Sanctus in my A level music course, and was lucky enough to hear a performance at which he was present.

My favourite piece from this work is the Kyrie, which blends the Muslim call to prayer with high church-style choral singing. But Youtube is failing to come up with the goods, so here’s the famous bit instead.

  1. Love this piece too, it’s all on Spotify, which is something!

    • Oooh – I didn’t know that. I have a signed CD somewhere but can’t find it. The Kyrie is spine-tingling.
